Are you addicted too?

What is it about One tree hill, Orange County, Smallville and the zillion other TV shows that have got half the world wrapped around their finger?

Don't we have MORE than enough excitement, sweet victories, lasting friendships, broken relationships, male drama, problems, tensions, ups and downs in our own life? Yet we are addicted. Yet we want more.

Do we watch it for a thrill?
Do we watch it because we relate to ceratin characters? certain instances?
Do we watch it because the guys/girls are hot?
Do we watch it as a means of escape from our own life (hectic/boring)?

It seems to be a mixture of all the above and even more probably. I havn't given this topic enough thought myself, so do not expect me to reason it out on this post of mine. But this is one question that often runs through my mind. I start thinking about it...but thoughts run haywire, some of my reasoning satisfies me, other....? I havnt been able to lay my hands on a clear cut answer. Is there a clear cut answer? Or does it vary from person to person?

ello Kito!
Quite the pickle there! really is, personally I'm not hooked on any of the shows probably because I don't have the patience to follow them in order! The thing is, even with books or regular movies, we tend to enjoy stepping away from our world and absorbing another, so that we can walk away with a blend of both that we think could be better! What's a little sad, is how little shows like OC and OTH have that you can take away! I'm not saying don't watch, that'd be hypocritical on my part, by all means do, but you can't expect to have grown once your back in your own world.
Good post! Let's hope you get more comments.(I've updated too!:P)

Hey Blogspot :P,

hmm...good question there! I must admit I too am guilty of a minor addiction now and then ;)

I guess the reason being, that every once in a while we need that break from ou regular lecklustre existence. these shows are like the pause button on the remote of our lives..if that made any sense at all.

They allow us to just stop and watch for a moment. Take that breather that we all need and watch someone elses life...their joys, sadness, love life and other experiences. Get to see someone else screw stuf up or have fun for a change.

It's just nice to see things from the other persons point of view sometimes. For once we aren't the centre of attention. This time it's someone elses life. As weird as it might sound to some...for many poeple that's the case.

Anyways, interesting post. Will be expecting quite a few responses and opinions. After all addicts are plentiful! And then there are just those who love to comment! ;) Take care! Blog on!

Peace!

Hey Keetsss,
Well, I can say tht I too am guilty of watchin these shows once in a while.. but in the case of hindi serials, the gud thing abt them is tht even if u do one watch 1 episode & then see the next abt & days later, u wouldd still know what would have happened in btn.. the plots get sooo predictable at times... UFFFFF!!
yet, we never fail to take time off to see whther whether the hero is cheating on his wife or the heroine committed suicide...at times it feels as though I wrote da script ;) coz I can literally say what the guy or girl is gonna say or do next... thts REALLY annoyin & borin..
To be honest, i really don't knw y, still, ppl take time off to watch these... Ahh well, guess its a way of leaving the world of reality & floating through the world of perfectness...
& Ju, i TOTALLY agree wit u on Tom Welling... TOOOO gud... in all aspects!! ;)

Tom Welling's magic powers don't seem to be working on me these days too!:P Yet, yet, he is NOT becoming gay!:P He is definately hot but I think am suffering from an overdose of him! Who would have thought?! Haha!

Again, however his poster retains its place on my wall. =)

Have stopped watching smallville after the 5th season... the plot was getting wayy too repitative!

I don't see why anyone should feel guilty about watching whatever the watch. Perhaps it's only a feeling that resembles guilt, because actual guilt would probably have them stop watching TV altogether.

TV shows don't mean more to me than literature, music and movies, and video games. Today some may argue that video games are sickeningly mindless scenarios created for them who lack what some of us luww to call 'a social life', or maybe just a 'life'. And fewer others argue that music and movies are similar such commercial perversions of that untouchable substance from which their preferred authors and poets extract and present. However, as it stands, I see a similar passion among fans of each. I see an identical desire for partial or whole fiction, which seems to help. The help it offers is the 'escape from reality' everyone seems to need, and not just want. Again, no reason why anyone should feel guilty, unless it becomes an obsession.

Sad but true, the balance is always hard to find. Sadder and truer, if the balance is ever found, the situation always deteriorates thereafter. That appears to be a law. The younger generations of today tend to draw analogies, and once again, being young, they take to these analogies very sincerely. It's not very hard to spot a youngster who dresses, talks, and behaves as an adult would. The balance or 'rhythm' is upset today, and soon may be destroyed. I can understand when some say that they have learned from shows like OC. It's the same ol' same ol'.

TV has a much deeper impact than many acknowledge. As the world turns, I hope it's never too late.

Thanks Ashiq, for that comment. Made me think a little beyond, and your reasoning satisfied me, unlike my own!:P

Like Komal,Harry and you rightly hit on-"escape from reality". Indeed. We all need that sometimes.

One thing which ashiq said- "Again, no reason why anyone should feel guilty, unless it becomes an obsession." I am actually obsessed with it. Its something I just HAVE to watch. But I dont feel guilty about it. I enjoy it. I just used to wonder what was it that made me soo hooked on to it... like reading. And I have found my answer.=) But I am not guilty!:P
